  • Eighty Eight

Eighty eight keys entwine their arms
Embracing two souls of enchanted lore
Casting dreams across the melody of notes
Barefoot lovers entwine their love upon the oak wood floor

Eighty eight constellations revolve once more
Gathering the notes of music for heaven’s door
Angels attract two souls on their list
    Entwining their hearts forever more

    Eighty eight dots and dashes
A special code of love sent from above
Spell out God’s Hugs and Kisses
For two barefoot lovers beloved © 2010

  • A lying 8 is the symbol for eternity. So 88 is a higly symbolic number. I like this piece although I’m not really sure what it wants to tell me. I wonder why God’s Hugs and Kisses is capitalized. Is there a special reason? The image of barefoot lovers on oak wood floor is really good, I like that very much.
But as I said I’m not sure what this poem is supposed to tell me. Maybe it’s just me. Could be cause for me it’s really late and I have a hard time with rhyme and structured poetry. Enlighten me please.

  • I love how this poem flows. I like the symbolism of this, especially the last stanza.

  • @Lady_Bella - Thank you so much for your kind comments.

HI … I completely understand the
confusion but I will try to explain my reasoning behind the poem. The
poem is tied together about two lovers and how the number eighty eight
entwines their life. Why eighty eight … because of the music I
referenced in my post. Below is how eighty eight is used in the three
    stanzas:

Stanza 1 – eighty eight is the number of keys on a piano and thus the third verse reference to melody of notes.

    Stanza
2 – eighty eight is the number of constellations that the astronomical
society has sectored off the universe for reference reasons and as such
the reference of the music notes at heavens door.

    Stanza 3 —
eighty eight dots and dashes is the number used by amateur radio
operators to send Hugs and Kisses to someone else and as such I tied
God sending Hugs and Kisses for the two barefoot lovers.

    I
sometimes use a lot of figurative language and as such sometimes the
meaning is really obscure. Now you know how my mind works. It’s scary I
know. I bet you wished you hadn’t asked the meaning.

  • I have a wonderful feeling reading your work. You have a good heart! (no pun)
Don’t worry ever about explaining your works..we write what we feel and think and live and then lay it out in a portrait of words for others to make their own sense of..that is POETRY!
    Peace my friend

  • @stevieheart - Why should I regret asking? It is a nice poem and makes so much more sense to me now. It happens that meaning is lost on me. I blame it on the late night (when I wrote that comment).

  • @caligula6 - Thank you so much for kind comment and reading my poetry.

  • @eve1684 - Thank you for your comment and I am glad you like this poem. I find sometimes people after finding the reason for the poem from the poet tend to have a completely different view and sometimes this changes their feelings towards the writing. This one was very enjoyable to write and I enjoyed the use of eighty eight throughout the poem. Thanks again for your comment and please at any time you find something that you would do differently or something that is wrong with my writing I would very much appreciate hearing your comments. I am here to learn and constructive criticism I will not take personally. Wishing you the best 2010 and thanks again!

  • This is beautiful. The dots and dashes from Above, made it so ethereal.

  • @ZSA_MD - why thank you so much for your comment and that stanza is my favorite as well.

  • Dear Stevie,

I got the first two references quite quickly. I immediately thought of a piano. I didn’t know the morse code reference.

Some how I kept visualizing the lovers dancing on the keys of the piano. Too many Busby Berkeley musicals in my consciousness.

Re: poem below. I gave up ink and paper over a decade ago. All my poems are first written on “slips of notepad” on two different computers nowadays.

  • @baldmike2004 - Mike thanks so much for your comment … I do all my poetry on computer as well, but I do keep a notepad and paper next to my bed because I wake sometimes in the night thinking … Awww Yes … and if I don’t jot it down then I will wake the next mourning thinking what was that idea. I think it my age getting in the way of memory. Thanks again for your comment.

P.S. aside from being sideways infinity, 8 is also a super auspicious number in Chinese culture

  • @jzrocker - You are absolutely correct. There seems to be a number of things related to the number 88. Thanks for  your comment.
